Distributed Database Overview
A distributed database management system is a software system in which portions of the database are stored on multiple computers within a network. It is a collection of multiple, logically interrelated databases, distributed over a computer network. It is divided into many partitions or fragments that can easily be copied. Many users can access the database at the same time without interfering each other. Sometimes distributed database system is used to refer jointly to the distributed database and the distributed DBMS.
Components of Distributed Database
There are many components such as the database manager, the distributed transaction manager and distributed database technologies like local autonomy, synchronous and asynchronous distributed database technologies.
Key Features
Distributed database systems are comprised of infinite architecture. This characteristic is the key for maintaining a system that is to be scalable. The other key features are transparency, free object naming, transaction management, concurrency controls, security, backup, recovery, query optimism, access path selection and more.
Advantages
The most important benefit of distributed database management system is that they are economical and can be modified, added or removed from the system easily without affecting other modules. In this system data is located near the site of greatest demand, access and processing are faster due to several sites splitting out the work load, a fault in one database system will only affect one fragment, instead of the entire database.
Disadvantages
DDBMS also has a few disadvantages. Managing and controlling is complex, there is less security because data is at so many different sites. It provides more flexible accesses that increase the chance of security violations since the database can be accessed throughout every site within the network. In a distributed database, enforcing integrity over a network may require too much of the network's resources to be feasible. Distributed databases are difficult to work with, and as a young field there is not much readily available experience on proper practice.
